Transparency

Co-produced with Vi Opplinger

Our installation invites participants into a vulnerable yet powerful collective experience. Upon entering the space, viewers are presented with a simple instruction: write your name on a transparent tab, tie it to the overhead web with black string, then connect yourself with red string to anyone in the room with whom you've shared sexual intimacy. This participatory work explores the complex interweaving of desire, connection, and community. As participants engage, they navigate several dimensions:

First, each person confronts a deeply personal decision about disclosure. The act of tying or not tying a red string becomes a meditation on privacy, visibility, and the social contexts that shape our willingness to acknowledge intimate connections.

Second, the physical act of creating these connections invites both celebration and reflection. For some, it becomes a joyful recognition of meaningful encounters; for others, a moment to process complex or difficult memories. Throughout the exhibition, we witnessed participants who came specifically to honor new connections they had formed. For others, navigating conversations on what, exactly, constitutes “sex?”
